10/4/09 - The Olympic Gods and Goddesses
In order of importance/birth:
Zeus: ruler of the gods and Mount Olympus. god of the sky. symbols: eagle and lightning bolt the Olympian brothers each received a weapon to battle the titans: Zeus received the lightning bolt, Poseidon received the trident and Hades received the helmet of invisibility -- after they defeated the Titans they drew lots to see who would rule what -- Zeus the sky, Poseidon the seas and Hades the underworld.

Ares: son of Zeus and Hera god of war symbols are the vulture and the dog
Hephaestus: son of Zeus and Hera god of forge and fire husband of Aphrodite
Apollo: son of Zeus and the nymph, Leto god of light and music Helios is actually the god of the sun, but over time, Apollo the god of light and Helios 'merged' in the mythology and people began recognizing Apollo as the one driving the sun chariot. symbols: laurel tree, crow and dolphin
Artemis: daughter of Zeus and the nymph, Leto (twin sister of Apollo) goddess of the moon symbols: cyprus tree and deer
Hermes: son of Zeus and Maia (one of Atlas' seven daughters) god of thieves and commerce fastest god, with his winged sandals... acted as messenger for the gods
